Mary Tyler Moore is more than the girl next door. She is the fantasy girl of the American dream. Tall and well-proportioned, with slim legs, a wide sensuous mouth and a pert nose, she pranced her way through six years as Laura Petrie, the zany-sexy wife on CBS’s “The Dick Van Dyke Show” — getting her toe caught in bathtub faucets, losing precious manuscripts, being lovably eccentric. She was bright but not aggressive, wholesome but not puritanical, funny but not slapstick. “She’s got a clean-cut, fresh look about her,” says one of “Van Dyke’s” writer-producers, “but very sexy-much sexier than Doris Day.”
